Livestock species: Grass-fed Cattle

Summary

This CMA has been set up to pay for an emergency pasture disease outbreak of dieback buffel.
It will be additional to the budget allocated for this node. In early 2017, producers across parts of Central Queensland reported widespread dieback of pastures including buffel grass, as well as native bluegrass in the Wide Bay Burnett region. Thedieback was unexplained and raised significant producer concern in affected regions. In response to producer concern about pasture dieback across parts of northern, central, and southern Queensland, MLA announced a multi-pronged action plan to map and address therecent pasture dieback.

Objectives

This project aims to determine the use of hyperspectral imaging to determine pastures affected by dieback prior to visual signs being presented. In addition this project aims to collect field samples of grass from dieback areas and use next generation sequencing to assess the microbial communities associated with dieback using 3 molecular markers (amplicons). Finally, preliminary analysis will be conducted on the distribution and identity of mealy bugs in pasture dieback.
