Animal Nutrition, Feed

Project start date: 01 August 2019
Project end date: 30 June 2021
Publication date: 29 January 2024
Project status: In progress
Livestock species: Grain-fed Cattle
Relevant regions: International

Summary

Feed ingredients commonly used in Indonesia include onggok, rice bran, pollard, corn gluten feed (CGF), distiller's dried grains with soluble (DDGS), coconut cake (copra), palm kernel meal, soybean meal, corn, coffee skin, dried cassava drops, pineapple skins, elephant grass, and corn plants. Feed ingredients that are by-products of the local industry will be sustainable, depending on the related industry's sustainability. The main feed ingredients, which are mostly imported, depend on importing countries' production, and it is subject to fluctuation of Rupiah exchange rates.

Objectives

This desktop study aims to complete information related to beef cattle feed that is commonly used, including the percentage of use, availability, and carrying capacity, and to explore alternative feed potentially used in Indonesia. The method used includes secondary data collection and Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with stakeholders of beef cattle feed ingredients.

Key findings

The strategies recommended as an effort to ensure the availability and quality of local feed ingredients for beef cattle include:

(1) creating an information system and feed logistics
(2) local feed ingredients management strategy; development of centers and barns for local feed ingredients
(4) support for government policies and infrastructure, and
(5) cooperation.

It is recommended that livestock business actors optimise the use of feed ingredients around their area, apply technology to develop storage-resistant products, and start developing complete edible weed-based feed products in plantations and agriculture.
