Summary

Building sustainability in trade of cattle to Vietnam requires developing sustainable supply chains. There is an opportunity to create a specific point of difference for Australian cattle through an active program to increase throughput through a network of key abattoirs in Northern Vietnam.

Objectives

Working with the largest importer of cattle from Australia to Vietnam with feedlot operations in Northern and Southern Vietnam. While the feedlots are productive there may be scope to use this consultative committee co-funding framework to also support health and nutrition programs with them in the future.

Key findings

Increasing throughput creates efficiency through scale that can only be achieved through having a consistent quality and availability of cattle. Australian cattle have the ability to provide this consistency.

Benefits to industry

By having the project delivered under a co-funding platform, benefits of this approach will be:
• facilitates a joint opportunity for all exporters to increase industry ROI
• the LEP can contribute half the funding to offset the costs for stakeholders
• the co-funding pathway is also more agile and is designed to deliver direct and strategic outcomes for stakeholders
• it allows elements (like new facilities or feedlot nutrition) to be added or removed from the deliverables as agree to by all parties involved.
