Summary

MLA and the Australian Lot Feeders Association (ALFA) are collaboratively executing a feedlot career development and training pathway via an online portal ‘Feedlot Tech’. The portal is due for formal launch in October 2021. ALFA has identified that training in ‘Feed mill operation and cattle feeding’ is a high priority due to low staff retention in this operational area and associated costs including productivity losses experienced whilst new staff are trained to reach a competency level. This first module developed will act as a test case to determine sector engagement and value from training.

Objectives

To develop an engaging and relevant online training module in feed mill operation and cattle feeding for integration with the feedlot career development and training pathway.

Benefits to industry

This project is developing online training material to improve core competencies of feed mill operators and cattle feeding staff across Australian feedlots.

MLA action

MLA and ALFA will formally launch the 'Feedlot Tech' portal in October 2021.

Future research

MLA will invest in further online course development pending industry engagement and completion of this initial module.
