Summary

The Livestock Export R&D Program is part of the broader MLA-LiveCorp joint LEP which also includes communication, issues management, trade development and market access activities. A review of the R&D program from 2009, 2012 & and then again in 2018 recommended that an independent technical member be appointed to the Live Export R&D Advisory Committee to add rigour to the project selection, design and monitoring process. This project is a continuation of this recommendation.

Objectives

The Independent Technical Advisor is responsible for:
• providing objective advice to the Program on the suitability of project terms of reference
proposals, applications, methodologies and reports
• assisting identify knowledge gaps and potential deficiencies in the research and extension portfolio
• assisting the Live Export R&D Manager with technical consideration of projects, as
requested
• evaluating the scientific rigour contained within project proposals and the efficacy of
proposed research methodologies
• evaluating the use of scientific methodologies in projects against the required outcomes
• attending and participating in all LERDAC and Management Committee meetings and
other research related activities, as required, and
• Engaging in LERDAC out of session activities as required (project meetings, project
working groups or other research related activities).

Key findings

There is independent scientific oversight and review on all LEP funded R&D projects.

Benefits to industry

The appointment of an independent technical member to the committee adds rigor to the project selection and development process.

MLA action

MLA will continue to engage an independent scientist as part of the Live Export R&D advisory committee as long as reviews of the program prove it will be beneficial.

Future research

Similar future projects will be created based on the recommendation from the R&D program review.
