Summary
Significant strategic projects to improve the level of services Sheep Genetics provides are currently underway, including those that involve the data pipelines and genetic evaluation that is tightly linked with third party service providers. For these projects to be successful to all parties involved, it is important to have the right expertise, experience and knowledge involved in the projects.
Objectives
Specific responsibilities include:
- product owner management of the Sheep Genetics Database re-development planning - including the coordination of subject matter experts within both AGBU and Sheep Genetics for the project’s service provider access.
- Provision of effective communications with Executive and Advisory Committee Chairs and Committee members when required.
- Provide experience and guidance in the continued development and implementation of a robust technical strategy for Sheep Genetics.
- Participate in ongoing Sheep Genetics research and development strategies, in liaison with MLA and associated research agencies.
People:
- Provide leadership of staff and contractors working for Sheep Genetics.
- Foster strong relationships within the Sheep Genetics team and a clear sense of mission and commitment to the goals of Sheep Genetics.
Stakeholder:
- Provide regular reporting of Sheep Genetics progress on involved projects to MLA and key industry stakeholders, including the Sheep Genetics Advisory and Executive Committees, and other forums as required.
- Represent MLA at industry events, field days, conferences and other public activities, with respect to the activities of Sheep Genetics and related programs.
- Maintain a strong understanding of producer and stakeholder needs, and the drivers of profit and sustainability in Australian sheep and wool production. Maintain effective networks and relationships with commercial and seedstock producers, processors, research partners, commercial partners, consultants and other relevant people
Key findings
This project lead to the:
• Closer involvement with the data pipelines and processes between Sheep Genetics and AGBU
• Improved level of service to the Sheep Genetics providers and clients
Benefits to industry
The re-development of the Sheep Genetics database will significantly improve the service provided to the sheep industry as well as ensure the longevity and adaptability of the systems. This project provided the appropriate support to ensure that these are developed in a way that meet the technical needs of a world leading genetic evaluation and the needs of Sheep Genetics clients.
MLA action
MLA continues to re-develop and improve the Sheep Genetics database with further phases currently being developed and implemented.
Future research
Continual development of the Sheep Genetics database will continue for improved industry use for its stakeholders.
