Summary

MLA and the Australian Lot Feeders' Association have identified an opportunity to develop a clear career pathway for the attainment of skills for feedlot employees. This will include educational, training, professional development resources and opportunities.

Objectives

1. Develop training materials (as per MLA specifications) for the Cattle transport course (modules: Supervision, ensuring safety for staff, truck drivers and cattle; Loading and uploading cattle practices; Fit to load; Chain of responsibility and cattle transport responsibilities, Lairage and truck effluent management) to integrate into the Feedlot Industry Training Portal 'Feedlot Tech'.
2. Develop training materials in consultation with subject matter experts approved by MLA.
3. Develop training materials in accordance with a provided style guide and format requirements to a highly professional standard.

Key findings

A Livestock Handling Fundamentals course (including cattle transport) was developed and released to industry through the online training portal 'Feedlot Tech'.

The course contains nine modules:
1. Good Stockmanship
2. Receive and Dispatch
3. Working Your Facility
4. Team Leader
5. Animal Wellbeing for Transport
6. Chain of Responsibility
7. Lairage.

Benefits to industry

It is envisaged that the online training course will accelerate skill development in livestock handling and cattle transport. This will build staff capability and improve animal wellbeing in feedlot operations.

MLA action

The course has been published on Feedlot Tech and is available to all MLA members and grainfed levy payers.

Future research

MLA continues to fund course development in Feedlot Tech.
