Summary
Pestivirus (BVDV) and Bovine Herpes Virus (BoHV-1) have been identified as important viruses in the BRD complex. Pestivirus has an immunosuppressive effect on infected animals, increasing their susceptibility to respiratory pathogens and Bovine Herpes Virus causes Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR). The overall goal of this project is to develop a Live Pestivirus and Bovine Herpes Virus (BVDV-BoHV-1) vaccine for registration in Australia to
prevent disease associated with Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) complex.
Objectives
The objective of the project was to undertake studies to support the registration of a live BVDV-BoHV-1 vaccine for use by the Australian red meat industry.
Key findings
As part of this project, the vaccine underwent a number of clinical and laboratory studies. Intervet international will continue to develop and commercialise the vaccine for the Australian red meat industry.
Benefits to industry
A dual Pestivirus and Bovine Herpes Virus (BVDV-BoHV-1) vaccine for the Australian red meat industry, and in particular feedlots, will help prevent disease associated with Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) complex.
