Summary

The Cattle and Beef Trade Monitoring data enables MLA to capture market intelligence from major cities in Indonesia. The data collection since 2015 provided good historical data on the market situation impacted by various conditions, the price fluctuation and local supply of cattle and beef. The monthly wet market and retail data is collected and provided to MLA Market Analysis team to feed into the broader trade data.

Reports detailing the various data of cattle and beef prices, customer profiles, consumption trends, information around impact of Indian buffalo meat against Australian beef (both hot meat and boxed beef) in wet markets, the movement of local cattle from producer areas to consumer areas in seven main regions and a brief analysis on the impact to trade.

Stakeholders will be able to use the information to better assist strategic decision making through:

  • the development of evidence-based risk analysis (biosecurity risk perspective)
  • further assessment of impact to trade – competitiveness, socio-economic, welfare
    aspects
  • targeted biosecurity/border control activities by quarantine agency, and
  • targeted market intelligence activities to monitor the impact of Indian buffalo meat.

Objectives

To enable well-informed and substantiated market insights for stakeholders, this project captured comprehensive data on cattle and beef prices, customer profiles, consumption trends, information around impact of Indian buffalo meat against Australian beef (both hot (fresh) meat and boxed beef) in wet markets and the movement of local cattle from producer areas to consumer areas.
This data can be used to better understand the market and its relationship with the industry.

It will target MLA’s market access strategy, with information being shared with Indonesian stakeholders and officials, which will assist in determining how their resources can be best utilised.

Key findings

The high feeder prices in 2022 has impacted the slaughter number in abattoirs and demand for fresh beef. The inflation in transport and staple commodities, along with recovery post-covid 19 contributed to the weak demand and purchasing power by consumers. This didn't just affect the beef industry but also other commodities. Throughout the year, the beef prices remain stable (high), and a small influx happened during the festive seasons like Eid Fitr, Eid Adha and Christmas.

Benefits to industry

Stakeholders will be able to use the information to better assist strategic decision making:

  • Development of evidence-based risk analysis (biosecurity risk perspective).
  • Further assessment of impact to trade – competitiveness, socio-economic, welfare
    aspects.
  • Targeted biosecurity/border control activities by quarantine agency.
  • Targeted market intelligence activities to monitor the impact of Indian buffalo meat.

MLA action

Continue the project in CY 2023.
