Summary

This project will produce communication pieces to highlight the benefits provided to producers through the supply of cattle to the live export dairy trade. For example, the use of farm technologies such as sexed semen has resulted in a surplus of heifers that can be sold to live export and diversify farm income.


From an exporter perspective, the opportunities for the Australian live dairy cattle trade, with the cessation of the supply of live dairy cattle from New Zealand. It is also an important opportunity to provide information to producers on where live cattle are supplied to, the benefits of selling cattle to the trade and how they are treated overseas.

Objectives

The outcomes of this project will complement the “Value of the Dairy Cattle Export Industry” project. The project will produce a communication piece that ensures producers, exporters, the Australian public, as well as law makers and decision makers, understand the benefits that the livestock export industry brings to farm gate prices, improving animal welfare, and the Australian economy.

Benefits to industry

This project will deliver communication pieces that highlight three case studies of dairy farmers and supply chain participants, illustrating the benefits of supplementary revenue for live trade, impacts of cessation of live trade and financial impacts of live trade in specific dairy regions.
