MLA, UNE and NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) are co-owners of the BREEDPLAN and OVIS analytical software (the Owners) utilised to provide genetic evaluation services to beef cattle and sheep producers.

Summary

The delivery of BREEDPLAN and OVIS serves a range of strategic interests of the Owners, including the aspirations of the red meat industry to enhance the productivity of the red meat sector through genetic progress and profitability through return on investments via the increased understanding and use of breeding values by producers.
A significant and consultative review was recently undertaken by the Owners, and managed by MLA into the business models that currently deliver genetic evaluation services to the Australian cattle and sheep industry with recommendations on how to optimise these models for future success.

Objectives

This project aims to identify a range of delivery structure and business model options that may improve on the delivery of genetic evaluations for beef, sheep and goats in the future.

Benefits to industry

Multiple industry stakeholders were consulted throughout this process. This ensured that the review was comprehensive and considers all industry impacts – a collaborative approach to determine the most effective delivery and utilisation of genetic evaluation services in the Australian red meat industry.

MLA action

To work with the other owners of BREEDPLAN and OVIS to act as required on findings of the review.

Future research

The findings from the review will be used to facilitate improvement of the delivery of genetic evaluations for beef, sheep and goats in the future for Australia.
