Summary

Three programs of work aligned to the MLA 2025 strategy and Red Meat 2030 are being implemented in Vietnam. These programs are focussed on Regulatory Impact, Business Development and Consumer Transition. All of these programs have a focus on working with the Vietnamese Government and businesses where a strong language barrier exists and local expertise is required. The trade development manager in Vietnam is responsible for assisting the implementation of these programs of work and in addition to collect market insights and provide analysis to support decision making and strategy development. The LEP receives positive feedback from Industry on the provision of up to date and accurate insights and the on-ground/indigenous language support is vital to the collection of these insights.

Key findings

To date the established programs of work have been very successful in terms of implementation and this would not be possible without the support of a local Vietnamese consultant. Over the past 18 months the trade development manager has been able to continually update the Market Development Manager on insights and assist with on the ground support.

The LEP has identified animal welfare and business development as key programs of work in Vietnam including a three-year plan in place with the Department of Animal Health (DAH) to align welfare standards with Australian standards.

The trade development manager can, speak Vietnamese, has strong industry links/knowledge and can therefore provide a skillset which is required for successful progression of these projects.

MLA action

Continue the role of the Vietnam Trade Development Manager.

Future research

The added value in terms of relationships, market insights/intel and ability to conduct programs which otherwise would be difficult without a Vietnamese presence far outweigh the overall financial cost to the LEP of a trade development manager.
