PIRD - Lamb survival

Project start date: 01 June 2004
Project end date: 10 March 2008
Publication date: 10 March 2008
Project status: Completed
Livestock species: Lamb

Summary

The aim of the Sandstone Prime Time project was to improve the LCDC group's ability to manage for the highly variable climate in WA shrublands and optimize flock productivity within climatic limitations, and at the same time improve the amount and quality of rangeland feed.  The production objective was to increase lambing percent and reduce weaner mortality.
This would be achieved by resting paddocks to allow post-grazing recovery and improve feed resources, flushing ewes before joining, concentrating breeding in one paddock for joining to increase ram:ewe contact, lambing in the best rested paddocks, and more on-ground control of predatory dogs.   The project was terminated early as wild dog predation severely limited lamb survival and impacted viability or the trial.
