Summary

Background
There is increasing interest in ensuring dietary recommendations are supportive of sustainability and food security. To effectively address concerns in this broad topic area requires collaboration with other relevant disciplines and stakeholders and an informed understanding of the role nutrition can play.
Purpose and description
To determine effective strategies for improving the sustainability of the Australian diet, MLA commissioned CSIRO to extend their modelling on greenhouse gas emissions associated with the Total Wellbeing Diet and the Australian diet to the recently released Australian Dietary Guidelines . MLA commissioned Dr Beverley Henry (QUT) to prepare an internal document on sustainability and food security from an environmental science and agricultural perspective in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to inform role of nutrition. Funding was awarded to Deakin University who identified a need for quantitative surveys with dietitians' and consumers' to determine their knowledge of and interest in receiving information on agriculture and sustainability.
Objective
To identify dietary strategies which address both health and sustainability needs. To determine information dietitians require regarding agricultural sustainability.
