Summary
This project evaluated and developed knowledge on collaborative robotics (i.e. cobotics) technology through initial research, networking and practical applications, specifically on red meat packaging solutions. A review of global technologies and their providers was conducted on available cobotic technologies and existing manufacturing case studies. In addition to reviewing available cobotic technologies, this project also evaluated applications for red meat processing and the process steps for successful implementation. Participation in seminars and networking events were used to assess best industry practice.
Objectives
The overall objective was to conduct a series of initial pilot trials using modified cobots in a range of application scenarios, specifically in red meat packaging solutions, to develop a general methodology or framework for adoption of Cobotics in red meat processing and recommendations for future applications.
Key findings
The knowledge gained in this project enabled and guided developments into trialling the technology in practical red meat packaging applications. Preliminary trial work was conducted on packaging applications to enable the R&D project team to gain hands-on experience with the technology and all aspects of its implementation.
Benefits to industry
This project was terminated prior to completion as it was a disruptive period and impacted production. The project did not deliver on the above objectives and will not deliver benefit to industry.
MLA action
MLA has not conducted further research in the cobotics space but there is potential for research in this space in the future.
Future research
Initial trials conducted during this project targeted simple applications to gain a deeper understanding of the technology’s capabilities and limitations. This facilitated the development of a general methodology or framework for successful adoption of cobotics in red meat processing and recommendations for future applications.
