The industry has been advocating for a model based on eating quality to be released and implemented for sheepmeat which requires experts to help MSA with R&D project design as well as statistical support to develop the MSA Sheepmeat model.

Summary

The consultant assisted with the development and implementation of selected lamb and sheepmeat eating quality research projects.

Objectives

- preparation of agenda items and reports and participation in the MSA Sheepmeat Pathways Committee, Supply Chain Group and Sheepmeat Taskforce meetings
- assistance with the development and implementation of MSA Mark II sheepmeat model including strategic meetings with MLA, processors and retailers
- design and management of new lamb and sheepmeat R&D including the development of a new cuts-based system (MSA Mark 2)
- provision of consulting advice to the MSA R&D team.

Key findings

For transformational change to the sheepmeat industry, the current MSA program needed to evolve from a pathways approach, that is well adopted by the processing sector, to a sophisticated cuts-based eating quality prediction model.

Benefits to industry

This project provided the following benefits which included but were not limited to:
- providing input into strategic development and experimental designs of nominated R&D projects
- development and innovation of the MSA Sheepmeat Model
- provision of scientific and industry support to MSA team members.
