This project supports the National PDS coordinator (L.PDS.1805).

Objectives

The purpose of this project is to deliver support capacity to the National PDS Coordinator and MLA Producer Demonstration Sites Project Manager, that will assist with the efficient development and delivery of the National PDS program.

The PDS Project Development & Coordinator Officer will continue to drive the development and implementation of the PDS model and coordinate the PDS network to ensure that program outcomes are delivered to industry.

Key findings

COVID restrictions throughout 2020-21 have had an impact on almost all PDS projects, with the effects varying depending on the project and the location(s). Impacts noted include:

COVID influencing the timings of the methodology.

The need to postpone events, meetings, farm visits and data collection.

A reduction in the number of people attending such events, which has seen a number of the projects indicating an effect on the number of observer producers engaging in the projects and subsequently completing the observer surveys.

Due to COVID restrictions there has been a reduced ability for some facilitators to engage more broadly with a wider group of producers.

Where facilitators have not been able to have effective face-to-face engagement, we have seen some facilitators indicate that this has caused problems with being able to demonstrate data collection processes and subsequently reduced data submission from producers.

Benefits to industry

This project delivered support to the National PDS Coordinator and MLA Producer Demonstration Sites Project Manager, that will assist with the efficient development and delivery of the National PDS program. The program aims to increase the rate of adoption of key management practices and technologies that improve business profitability, productivity and sustainability through livestock producers pursuing new skills, management practices in local livestock production systems.

MLA action

MLA continues to deliver the Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) program, supporting livestock producers working in peer-to-peer groups to pursue new skills, knowledge and management practices applicable to their own commercial livestock production system
