Last Friday, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) published the April Livestock and Poultry: World Markets and Trade report, which included updated forecasts of US beef imports and exports. The forecasts show a substantial shift in prospective US trade flows. Although US export forecasts have been revised up slightly, US imports have been revised up by 184,000 tonnes carcase weight equivalent (cwe) to 1.89 million tonnes cwe. This means that the net trade balance for 2024 (exports minus imports) has been revised down 175,000 tonnes to minus 622,000 tonnes, the largest deficit since 2008.

The cattle market has experienced a downturn across all indicators. Cattle yardings have decreased by 20,001 to 67,332 head, marking a 30% increase compared to figures from 2023. Notably, there has been a 40% increase in week-on-week yardings compared to 2023.

The cattle market has experienced a general easing across all indicators this week. Yardings have decreased by 5,802 to 62,583 head, but remaining above the weekly average of 45,851 head, a 23% increase from last year.

The cattle market was mixed this week with lifts to feeder and restocker steers, and easing in all other indicators. Yardings lifted week-to-week by 20,304 head to 74,172. A 38% lift to last week, and 98% year-on-year.

Lamb prices have jumped all over the place in the last couple months. From the lowest prices in recent memory to the highest prices since January 2023. The outlook for the year has vastly improved with the light lamb indicator increasing by 54% since October 2023, with a significant shift in producer sentiment.
