Summary

The National Coordinator of the Forewarned is Forearmed project coordinated the effective management of the investment in research, development and adoption projects as set out in the Head Agreement between MLA and the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE). Forewarned is Forearmed (FWFA): equipping farmers and agricultural value chains to proactively manage the impacts of extreme climate events (RnD4P-16-03-007) run from 2017 to 2023 and provided five new Bureau of Meteorology forecast products for extreme events weeks to months ahead. Funding partners include the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry as part of its Rural Research and Development (R&D) for Profit Program, with further cash and in-kind contributions from 14 project partners.

Objectives

The objective of the overall FWFA program is to realise significant productivity and profitability improvements for Australia’s primary producers, through:
a) Generating new knowledge and technologies to provide unique forecasts of extreme climate and weather events for at least nine (9) agricultural industries. The information from this project will be delivered to farmers through tailored new technologies, products and tools.
b) Strengthening pathways to extend the results of rural R&D, including understanding the barriers to adoption, by providing a direct link between research groups, regional and industry-specific reference groups and agribusiness supply chains. This will allow farmers, advisors and agribusiness to provide input to the products they will use, as well as identify response scenarios for evaluation.
c) Establishing and fostering industry and research collaborations that form the basis for ongoing innovation and growth of Australian agriculture: The project includes collaboration between eight RDCs, research providers, state governments and extension specialists.
