Bred Well Fed Well extends to beef

The key production benefits of using superior genetics when breeding and feeding to boost profitability will be the focus of the first Bred Well Fed Well workshop to be extended to beef producers, following the program’s success in the sheep industry.
With the support of Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), Bred Well Fed Well’s practical content has been adapted to suit the beef production sector after five years of delivering tangible on-farm results to sheep producers.
MLA General Manager – Producer Consultation & Adoption, Michael Crowley, said the workshop was now available to beef producers following a successful pilot series.
“The practical, one-day workshops are an opportunity for producers to gain knowledge and skills in genetics and nutrition to help meet their enterprise objectives,” Mr Crowley said.
“They highlight the key production benefits of superior genetics, plus feed management for improved reproductive performance and herd productivity.”
The first Bred Well Fed Well workshop for beef producers is on Wednesday, 9 August, and is being hosted by Futurity Shorthorns, Glen Ayr, Kenebri NSW, from 9am to 4pm.
It will be delivered by University of New England’s Dr Peter McGilchrist, and private consultant and lecturer at Latrobe University, Dr Jason Trompf
Topics will include breeding better heifers and cows; improving heifer and cow nutrition; developing a breeding goal, and using Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) in bull selection
Producers will be able to use the outcomes of the workshop to help analyse and plan a genetics and nutrition regime suited to their environment and markets to boost herd profitability
