Global sheepmeat insights at LambEx 2018

20 June 2018

The consumer and market trends influencing demand for Australian sheepmeat globally will be among the insights discussed when Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) 2018 Global Markets Forum – Sheepmeat is held at LambEx 2018 in Perth.

The Forum will be delivered as a breakfast event on Wednesday, 8 August, and feature presentations by MLA’s International Business Managers from Australia’s key sheepmeat export markets.

MLA General Manager – International Business, Michael Finucan, said the Forum was an opportunity to get the very latest insights at a time when strong international demand is helping to support prices in the face of ongoing dry conditions in many sheep production regions of Australia.

“The 2018 outlook for sheepmeat exports remains positive, underpinned by import demand growth in China and subdued competition from New Zealand,” Mr Finucan said.

“For the first four months of 2018, Australian sheepmeat exports grew 11% year-on-year on the back of higher lamb and mutton production. The upward revision of the annual lamb and sheep slaughter outlook will flow onto exports with lamb shipments likely to surpass 2017's record-breaking year and mutton exports to reach a three-year high.

“Looking at market access, the signing of the long-awaited Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in March also creates new export opportunities for the industry that MLA is focused on capturing. In the EU, negotiations on an Australia-EU FTA will start soon and provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Australia to improve market access.”
